On Thursday August 8th the jets and giants played in the first week of preseason and, I saw a lot of good and a lot of bad for both teams. Even though its only pre season we saw some things that are promising form both teams. However there’s a couple of things I noticed that worried me about these teams futures this year.
Well start with the Jets. Sam Darnold one his one and only drive of the night looked good and confident. While he was out there the offense ran smooth and he looked in control. He came out and showed that at least for a drive he has improved upon last season and, that’s promising for this team going forward. I didn’t however like what I saw out of the backup QB Davis Webb. While Siemian and Falk looked good on the chances they had to play I felt I wanted to see more out of Webb.
Webb completed two of seven attempts for eleven yards and two interceptions. This was a very bad game for a young QB trying to prove his case for why he should be on the roster. On the other hand the other two backup QBs looked very well including the 24 year old Luke Falk who completed nine of eleven attempts for sixty nine yards and a touchdown. It was a good game of the young man who spent last season on the bench with Tennessee. The wrist injury is still scary but he could still prove to be a good young backup for Darnold this year.
The only other thing that stuck out to me on this Jets offense was Ty Montgomery. The former Packers running back showed a willingness to block on his only drive of the night. This isn’t much but it could be valuable with this teams very run heavy offense once Bell suits up in the regular season.
This Jets defense on the other hand was rather uneventful. We didn’t get to see much of some of these young guys we were excited to see play so there isn’t much to say about Quinnen Williams or the rest of this young defense in general. Of what we did see out if them was a bit of struggle as they had a tough time all night long attempting to slow down this Giants offense.
Speaking of this Giants offense. I came away from this game a lot more confident in their ability to play good football. There has been a lot of buzz around the new kid in town Daniel Jones. I think he did just about as much as he could do with the time he was given. I was impressed with the composure in the pocket and his ability to keep his eyes down field. He made a couple of really nice passes that really flashed his ability to become an elite level passer in this league. That being said this was just one preseason game and, he had one drive. I wanna see more out if this guy but he had just about as nice a start as he could have hoped for.
Kyle Lauletta played amazing as well. With the Chances he was given he proved that he could be a backup QB this year. That being said he will have some competition for that role this year with the ever present Alex Tanney. Both of these guys are good QBs and Both can play the backup role well. As of right now I expect them to put Lauletta on the Practice Squad this year and give the 3rd string role to Tanney again this year.
The running backs performed shockingly poor in this game. The offensive line were giving these backs room but they never capitalized on it. The biggest disappointment this game being Paul Perkins. After being out all of last season with an injury Perkins preseason return was poor at best. rushing four times for nine yards he seemingly struggled to get anything going against this Jets defense.
Now I wanna talk about these receivers a bit. Going into the start of the season this wideout room is gonna be decimated. With multiple players out with injury or suspension the Giants organization and fan base have to be please after what they saw out of guys like Bennie Fowler, Russell Shepard, and T.J. Jones. They had multiple backup receivers play well and I’m sure this has to improve their confidence going into the season.
Ok so its time to talk about this Giants defense. Who is this kid! Ryan Connelly seemed to be a part of every play out there. This guy looks like he has real potential to be something in this league. He is a high energy and high effort guy. Those two things always go well together. Again it is the pre season but this defense and particularly this guy looked great out there. He wasn’t the only standout however Julian Love looks to have some potential as a very good man coverage corner with some of the things he was doing out there.
This Giants defense has some really good young pieces in the depth chart and, I hope to see them grow into very good players.
In all there were some really promising players and moments for each of these teams but there was just as many disappointments as well. At the end of the day its still only the preseason and anything can change. We won’t know about these guy really until the regular season but its always exciting the see some of these guys get their first chances to make a name for themselves.
